The 411's are being replaced by the desiro you saw yesterday. They should start to be phased out during the summer.

OK. At least I've gone on one. Lets hope there's some problems with the new trains. My dad was talking to the Performance Manager of Waterloo and he says that the slam door stock is still the most reliable stock SWT have got and if one thing goes worng with the new tains, the whole train stops.

He was right. Each coach has a computer, this sorts out weights, air conditions, heat, lighting etc. For the train to run, all these computers have to talk to each other. As soon as they have a disagreement, they stop the whole train until somebody manages to get them all talking nicely to each other again ;D. Thats what caused the problems with the junipers.

The health and safety executive has ruled that all slam door trains have to be with drawn by 01.01.05, but i believe due to the late running Desiro program, and the network power supply problems, SWT will be applying to keep their slam door stock on slightly longer, possibly until 2006. The latest plan from SWT is that all the VEPs currently maintained at Wimbledon depot, will be moved into Northam depot, and used to cover Desiro diagrams through the summer, and then the VEPs will be the first units to be scrapped.

It will be sad :'(to see them go but there's an old saying "all good things come to an end sooner or later" but they won't be forgotten about. I dare say when the veps start to be withdrawn one of 'em will probably end up at york museum in the original BR blue and grey. also i think the same will happen to the class 411, 421, 422 and the class 438 (4TC) units. like you guys i too hope they have teething troubles with the desiros. then we can all have another chance to sample/ride on the slam door stock one more time eh?

All 6 Desiros are stabled at Bournemouth depot until they complete their testing. I am not quite sure what the state of play is with the new depot. There was meant to of been an granding opening about 2 weeks ago, but it was cancelled. They are going to tell us at work when they get a new date, so i will let you guys know anything i hear.

Thanks I would say you have about 13-18 months left but this may change. If the desiros get through the first hurdle of their test but if you don't ride on them soon you will miss out on the "goldern mk1 stock" also it may be roughly 2 months before the desiro trains really get there teeth stuck-in. so make the most of the slam door stock. cheers ash888 (class 60008 )

Steve is a member of south west trains fleet maintenance department at fratton depot. You saw the new depot at Northam, thats just outside southampton central, but is visible from the eastleigh to southampton line. It is nearly ready to accept its first desiro. We're all waiting for an invitation to the grand opening day. Over the last 24 hours, i have just found out that the EPB group plan to purchase 2325 {currently a Fratton bep} from Porterbrook leasing. They then plan to buy its former standard open and run in preservation in east kent. There is also talk of re opening West Worthing car shed as a new home for the southern electric preservation group! Great news for us southern fans!
